Newquay the Cribbar SUP Nick Healey

The Cribbar, just off the headland in Newquay UK, used to be a wave that a few of the surfers in the UK had a gun put away for one of the big days, but trying to find the perfect day when the wind and swell came together was something of an arcane art.  There was also an underlying attitutde in the UK that somehow big waves were not surfed anywhere other than Hawaii.  With the emergence Mavericks confirming that big wave surfing in cold waves was more that possible the light went on in the minds of a small group of UK watermen. The last 15 years has seen home grown talent like Al Meenie, Andy Cotton, Finn Mullen and others tackling big waves on the door step of the UK with paddle in, tow in and windsurf kit.

The number of people in the water when the Cribbar is breaking has been rising steadily over the last couple of years, Jan Sliegh took his SUP out there last year during a nice swell, but Nick Healey turned some heads on Saturday 19th November 2011, taking out a production Jimmy Lewis SUP and putting into some of the biggest mainland UK waves available.

Photographer Geoff Tydeman (website: http://gtimages.ifp3.com/) was taking the photos below, enjoy!
