Once again the SUP world decended on Watergate Bay in Cornwall UK for the BSUPA National Championships. SUPGlobal were there, competing, meeting and soaking up the atmosphere, all full report will be coming very soon. In the mean time we have the official results - congratulations to all the riders the standard this year is going through the roof, but new comer Andre Le Geyt from the Channel Islands took the first in the Mens Open Surf absolutely ripping up the waves. The Wittering Charity Paddle Race 29th July 2012 |

The annual charity race starts from Shore Road (on the beach at East Wittering), and ends at West Wittering Windsurf Club and competitors may use surfboards, SUPs or kayaks (prizes and medals for the winner of each category COMBINED with highest sponsorship money raised).

The Cribbar, just off the headland in Newquay UK, used to be a wave that a few of the surfers in the UK had a gun put away for one of the big days, but trying to find the perfect day when the wind and swell came together was something of an arcane art. There was also an underlying attitutde in the UK that somehow big waves were not surfed anywhere other than Hawaii. With the emergence Mavericks confirming that big wave surfing in cold waves was more that possible the light went on in the minds of a small group of UK watermen. The last 15 years has seen home grown talent like Al Meenie, Andy Cotton, Finn Mullen and others tackling big waves on the door step of the UK with paddle in, tow in and windsurf kit.

We get a lot of press releases at SUPGlobal.com and this one is has it all, great pictures, a great SUP event and lots to aspire to. The only bit we really don't get is how an event in 2011 can be the first event of the Stand Up World Tour 2012. Weird. The big news is that the Stand Up World Tour used to be a surfing only tour, in 2012 they are going to crown distance racers and surf slalom racers, so that should broaden the appeal to non costal folks! Anyway here are all the details:
