Paddle Round the Pier 2012

Mark Slater, one of the UK's top SUP paddlers recently complete in the 26 mile Paddle Round the Pier SUP Marathon in Brighton.  Mark talks us through the aciton.

The first ever 26 mile marathon distance SUP event in the UK was held at Brighton on 8 th July as part of the fantastic annual Paddle Round the Pier free beach festival.

Conditions were looking ok with the wind gusting up to around 12knots, a basic 3 lap course was laid and we were in the water and off by 9am. Ryan James (14') got off to a good start and pulled away into a convincing early lead, myself (12.6), James Hardy (14') and Shaun Taylor (14') jostled for positions on the first upwind leg with Nick Healey (12.6), Charlie Grey (12.6) and Rich Moreton (12.6) following.

Me Ryan

Mark Slater and Ryan James.

The downwind leg of the first lap saw James & Shaun pull ahead of me, but after completing lap 1, I stayed closer inshore for the next upwind section, as did Nick & Charlie and we managed to pull quite a bit of ground back and I rounded the upwind bouy 2nd behind Ryan.

Unfortunately Shaun had problems with the rudder system on his board and had to pull out. I found it very hard both mentally and physically starting the 3rd lap, we were all having to start digging deep into our reserves now. On last downwind leg to the finish the wind dropped considerably making it a long hard slog for the last few miles.

It was a very challenging, yet extremely rewarding (and in some sort of perverse way, quite enjoyable!) event to compete in.

A massive amount of respect must go out to all of the fellow competitors, some went through an amazing amount of pain to complete the full distance and it was truly awe inspiring to see them crossing the finish line.

So all in all a great event and it's great to have had a chance to be part of it.

A huge thank you to all of the Paddle Round the Pier crew for managing to pull it all together despite the rather challenging weather conditions we had over the weekend.
